When the Mavericks traded for Kristaps Porzingis in early 2019, they viewed him as Luka Doncic’s ideal complement on and off the court and a bedrock of their future title contention plans. Porzingis had an unprecedented two-way skill set perfect for the modern NBA, and he showcased it frequently as last season progressed, culminating in a particularly excellent showing in the Orlando bubble. Porzingis’ year ended three games early after a knee injury, though, which required surgery and amplified concerns about his long-term health. This season, he’s looked far from the dominant player seen late last year. For the first time since he arrived in Dallas, the question seems worth considering: Is it possible the Mavericks are better off without Porzingis in the team’s long-term plans?
