Live Updates: Duke 10 – NC State 7; Second quarter – 247Sports

RALEIGH, N.C. –  NC State (3-1) returns home Saturday after three straight road games to take on rival Duke (1-4). The Wolfpack and Blue Devils square off at at 3:30 p.m. on Raycom Sports Network. Although the schools are only 21 miles apart, the programs haven’t played since 2013. Duke’s won the last two and leads the all-time series 41-36-1. However, NC State’s won 14 of 17 since 1990.

NC State will be without 11 scholarship players for the fifth game of the season against Duke. Senior cornerback Chris Ingram, who has yet to play in 2020, remains out, while fellow junior cornerback Teshaun Smith and sophomore safety Rakeim Ashford are out for the season with shoulder injuries. — Chase Brice fakes the handoff and keeps it off the right edge. He picks up 9 yards for 2nd-and-1. Pack stuffs the run on the next play, 3rd-and-2 coming up for Duke from its own 29. NC State stuffs the run again and Duke will elect to punt on 4th-and-1 from its own 30.

— Person gets stuffed for a 3-yard loss, then picks up 2 the next play. NC State with a 3rd-and-11 coming up. Zonovan Knight entering the game in the backfield. Leary’s pass to Devin Carter falls incomplete. Trenton Gill coming out for a punt from the Duke 44. Duke blocks the punt and takes it back for a touchdown. Blue Devils take a 7-0 lead with 9:51 left in the first quarter.

— After a blindside block is called against NC State on the return, the Pack will start at its own 15-yard line. Zonovan Knight rushes for three yards on the first play of the drive, then fumbles it on the next play. Duke recovers, will start at the NC State 18. 

— Chase Brice had Noah Gray wide open across the middle in the end zone and overthrew him. 3rd-and-10 coming up for Duke. Bring the Takeaway Bone out! Payton Wilson intercepts Chase Brice’s pass and NC State will start from its own 11.

— Duke starts the drive on its own 14-yard line. Tanner Ingle blows up the run on first down, but Shyheim Battle called for PI on the next play. Duke gets a first down at the NC State 28. Chase Brice completes his first pass of the game that goes for a first down after two missed tackles by NC State. Payton Wilson and Isaiah Moore combine for the tackle for loss on Chase Brice and NC State gets the 3rd down stop!

— NC State’s drive will start from its own 27. Leary’s pass to CJ Riley is intercepted after Riley falls to the ground. No flag thrown, Duke will take over from its own 33.

— Targeting call is confirmed. Jakeen Harris has been ejected and Duke will have the next first down from the NC State 35. Isaac Duffy is now in the game for Jakeen Harris. Duke center Will Taylor down on the field. Isaac Duffy’s snaps at strong safety today in place of Jakeen Harris will be his first defensive snaps of his career. Duke completes a pass for a short gain, but Devils called for block in the back. The first quarter will be extended for one final play, with Duke now driven back for a 3rd-and-18 from NC State 28. Chase Brice’s pass falls incomplete. End of 1Q: Duke 7, NC State 0.

Second Quarter

Duke makes the 46-yard FG and takes a 10-0 lead with 14:55 to go in the first half. Leary evades pressure, rolls out, throws it to Thayer Thomas, pass is knocked out of his hands and Emeka Emezie comes down with it. All told, it’s a first down for NC State after a 15-yard catch at the Pack 47.  Leary finds Carter across the middle for a first down on the next play. First and 10 from the Duke 30. Leary’s pass to Devin Carter is caught and he’s driven out of bounds at the 1-yard line. Jordan Houston gets the carry and punches it into the end zone for a 1-yard TD! Duke 10, NC State 7 with 10:44 left in the first half.

— Tanner Ingle makes the tackle after a 3-yard gain for Duke. Not exactly sure what the celebration was after that play. Drake Thomas then wraps up the Duke RB for a loss. Isaac Duffy gets his first tackle on third down to force a punt. Running into the kicker called on NC State’s Delbert Mimms. Looked like he barely made contact with punter’s toe, but it’s a five-yard penalty and a first down. Chase Brice keeps it for a 16-yard gain to the NC State 8. 1st-and-Goal coming up for Duke. Huge missed tackle by NC State and Duke gets the touchdown on an 8-yard reception by Jake Bobo. PAT good. Duke leads 17-7 with 3:43 left in first half.

— Devin Leary finds Emeka Emezie along the left side for a huge gain. Emezie’s 27-yard reception gets NC State to the Duke 48 on one play. Leary drops back, steps up in the pocket to evade the sack and rushes for 1 yard. On 4th down, Leary tries to draw Duke offsides on the snap cadence, but to no avail. NC State calls a timeout with a 4th-and-5 coming from the Duke 43. Levi Jones with ANOTHER blocked punt and Max Fisher recovers for a touchdown. NC State now trails Duke, 17-14, with 45 seconds left in the first half.

— Chase Brice finds Mataeo Durant for a big gain on two straight plays and Duke has the ball at the NC State 36. Payton Wilson with an unnecessary hit with Brice already going out of bounds. Brice was in bounds, but still no need for the hit. Penalty flags thrown, and Duke will get half the distance of the goal. Duke has it at the NC State 14. Duke hits the FG and takes a 20-14 lead into the half
